mit mir umhergehenden Novizen des Klosters*) hörte, als
Oberster der Götter oder Kami in Gucqua residire, dem lieblichsten
Ort. Seine aus Tietsin (Indien) stammende Verehrung
*) Every convent of the Budsdo-doctrine has its Prior or Superior (Dsjunsi
or Osjo) and all the superiors are subjected to the superior or Osjo, who resides
in Miaco. The superiors of the Kosju-convents of the two ordres of .this, sect
are called Sioonin. The generals of the ordre, who live in Miaco under the title
of Monseki or Gomonseki (the left elated court), are of the race of the Mikaddo
(the elated court), and the next in rank to him (some of the relations of the
spiritual emperor having gone over to the sect of Budsdo). The buddhistic temple
of the Chinese in Nagasaki stand under their general, who lives on the mountaiu
Oobaku (near Miaco), as the successor on the archbishopric of Ingen followed
in China on the stool of Darma, the first Chinese pope (and 28th successor of
Siaka) and came over to Japan, to assist his countrymen (1650) ageinst the Mur-
rokoku (heretic opponents) or Christians. Being received by the Emperor (and
having produced rain by his praying in the mountain Kitoo), he converted many
to the religion of Buds and received for his residence the mountain Oobaku (near
Miaco), where he was followed by Okuffi. The buddhistic priests of Sasen (ecstacy),
if recognized as Godo (endowed with penetrating intelligence) are considered (by
the Japanese) to be able by Satori (meditation) to recognize secrete truths. All
the Budsdo-priests are called Siukke, as having retired from the world to convents.
The priests, called Dai Nembud Siu (of the Budsdo worship), who chiefly adore
Amida, visit the temple of the Siudosiu-sect, as belonging to it. The priests,
called Fonguansiu or Ikosiu (the most rich), who (belonging to the Buddhists)
visit the temple Fonguansi, are divided in Nis Fonguan Si Siu (the westerly followers
of the Fonguan sect) and in Figos Fonguan Si Sui (the easterly followers of the
Fonguan sect). The Bukwoo Si Siu (who agree mostly with the sect Montesiu),
visit the temple Bukwoo. In the Azta (temple of the three swords) in Mia, the
swords of former half-gods are preserved. The temple of Taisarattadu was founded
for the remembrance of the dragon, killing the centipede, which ate its eggs,
when afterwards an evil spirit troubled the travellers. The apostel Koosi drove
it out, by tying his belt round the column, he dwelt in and exhorting the people
to have belief. Amongst the Sin or Cami, the first place is occupied by the
Udsigami (the tutelar deity of the country) and a such is considered in Nagasaki
the god Suwa Daimio Sin (the great and holy image of Suwa), whose temple
stands on the Tatta-hill. As often as Suwa obtains a higher title of the dairi,
his Mia (temple) is built up higher. In the court stand the temples of Murasaki
Dai Gongen (the great and upright Murasaki) and the Symios Dai Miosin (the
great and holy Symios), each one having his Mikosi (an octogonal box, containing
the images and relics). Near is the chapel of the lord of thousand bones. The
chief festival (Matsuri) of Suwa is the Kunitz (Kuguatz Kokonoka), celebrated on
the ninth day of the ninth month (with the theatrical representations and processions)
sei durch chinesische Priester in Japan eingeführt und werde
in chinesischen Büchern gelehrt.
In
einer grossen Halle fand sich die Küche des Instituts.
