Ce Chardon eft nain , toujours fort bas , mais
n’eft point conftamment fans tige. Ses feuilles
font radicales & étendues en rond fur la terre ;
elles font vertes , oblongues , un peu étroites.,
finuées , pinnatifides , rétrécies à leur bafe, à découpures
anguleufes, & garnies d’aflez fortes épines.
De leur milieu naît une fleur purpurine,
droite, qui paroît foffile, dont le calice eft ovale,
conique , glabre , & point piquant. Cette plante
croît fur les peloufos 8c dans les prés fecs de l’Europe.
Tp. Çv.v. ) Dans les jardins elle poufle une
tige pluriflore , qui s’élève à trois ou quatre pouces
de hauteur.
Obferv. Les deux plantes confondues fous le
Carduus mollis de Linné, favoir, le Carduus
mollior. I . de Clufius, & le Carduus mollis de
M. Gouan, feront mentionnées dans cet Ouvrage
parmi les Sarrettes.
CHARME, CARPINUS; genre de plante à
fleurs incomplètes , de la divifion des Julifères ou
Amentacées, qui a des rapports avec les Bouleaux,
les Noifetiers , &c. & qui comprend des arbres
ou de grands arbrifleaux dont les feuilles font
fimples & alternes, & que l’on peut cultiver en
pleine terre en France.
C a r a c t è r e g é n é r i q u e .
Les Charmes portent des fleurs mâles & des
fleurs femelles fur le même pied, mais féparées
fur des chatons différens. Ces^hatons font oblongs ,
un peu lâches , & compolés d’écailles uniflores ,
grouppées fur un filet ou axe commun.
Chaque écaille du chaton mâle eft concave,
ovale-pointue, & fouvent un peu velue ou ciliée.
Elle recouvre huit à foize étamines fort courtes ,
pendantes fous leur écaille, & dont les anthères
un peu barbues , s’ouvrent obliquement à leur
fommet.
Chaque écaille du chaton femelle eft oblon-
gue, entière ou divifée , & un peu velue -, elle
recouvre une petite fleur qui confifte 1°. en un
calice monophylle , un peu campanule , à fix diVi-
fions, fupérieur, &perfiftant-, a0, en un ovaire
inférieur, ou qui fait corps avec la bafe du calice ,
& chargé de deux ftyles longs & colorés.
Le fruit eft une petite noix ovale, légèrement
comprimée , ftriée , couronnée par les dents du
calice, & qui contient une femence.
