C’eft un arbriffeau d’un bel afpeft , rameux ,
couvert d’un coton ferré ou couche , dont la tige
eft cylindrique, & dont les rameaux font fimples ,
mais divifés à leur fommet en pédoncules feuilles.
Ses feuilles font éparfes , non decurrentes , linéaires
, en alêne , épineufes en leurs bords & a leur
fommet, vertes 8c glabres en deffus, blanches 8c
cotonneufos en deffous. Les fleurs viennent en
panicules terminales -, leur calice eft entoure d un
petit nombre de braétées femblables aux feuilles ,
mais point plus longues que le calice même , fans
épines, 8c cotonneufes; les. écailles inferieures
font plus longues, recourbées , terminées par une
pointe- en alêne 8c épineufe. La couronne eft d un
jaune luifant, de la grandeur de la fleur, & à
écailles un peu dentées. Cette plante croît en Afrique

CARMANTINE, J u s t i c i a ; genre de plante
à fleurs monopëtalées , de la divifion des Perfon-
nées y qui a de grands rapports avec les Ruellies ,
les Barrelières 8c les Acanthes , & qui comprend
un grand nombre d’efpèces , qui font des arbrif-
feaux ou des herbes exotiques , dont le? feuilles
font fimples 8c oppofées, & dont les fleurs axillaires
ou terminales , ont la corolle labiee , 8c
n’ont que deux étamines.
C ARAC TERE GÉNÉRIQUE.
Chaque fleur confifte l ° . en un calice petit ,
profondément divifé en cinq découpures droites
& pointues-, a0, en une corolle monopétale labiée ,
ayant fa lèvre fupérieure échancrée ou bifide , 8c
l’ inférieure à trois divifions -, 30. en deux étamines
attachées à la corolle , fit liées fous la lèvre fupérieure
& dont les filamens portent chacun une
anthère droite, à deiix loges réunies ou diftantes ;
40. en un ovaire fupérieur , oblong, chargé d’un
ftyle filiforme , &: dont le ftigmate eft fimple.
Le fruit eft une capfule oblongue, rétrécie vers
fa b afe, obtufe avec une pointe courte à fon
fommet, biloculaire , s’ouvrant par une languette
élaftique en deux valves cymbiformes, qui retiennent
chacune une portion de la cloifon qui lesdivife-
longitudinalement , & contenant dans chaque-,
loge une ou plufieurs femences comprimées.
