BALSAMINE, Impa tiens y genre de plante
àf fleurs polypétalées, qui a des rapports très-
marqués avec les Capucines & les Violettes , Sc
qui comprend des herbes dont les fleurs, quoi-
qu’irrégulièfes, font , dans quelques efpèces ,
remarquables pat leur beauté.
CARAC TERE- GÉNÉRIQUE.
La fleur confifte 1°. en un calice fort petit,
)caduque & compofé de deux folioles pointues :
ü°. en une corolle irrégulière , formée de cinq
pétales inégaux, reçus, ainfi que les étamines
& le piftil, dans une efpèce de capuchon membraneux,
coloré, pétalirorme , tronqué obliquement
en fon bord, 8c qui fe termine poftérieure-
ment en un éperon ou une corne plus ou moins
longe ; 30. en cinq étamines dont les filamen*
très courts (outiennent de petites anthères réunies
à leur fommet -, 40. en un ovaire fupérieur , ovale-
pointu , dépourvu de f ty le , & terminé par un
ftigmate fimple un peu plus court que les anthères.
" Le fruit eft une capfule uniloculaire & à cinq
valves, qui , dans la maturité, s’ouvrent avec
élafticité en fè roulant en fpirale : cette capfule
renferme plufieurs fèmences arrondies , attachées
autour placenta linéaire ou columniforme.

La tige de cette plante eft rouge & garnie de
rameaux alternes -, fes feuilles font oppofées ,
ovales, un peu dentées , 8c fefïiles ; les pédoncules
font folitaires , axillaires , plus longs que
les feuilles , & foutiennent chacun une fleur purpurine,
dont l’éperon eft gros & très-courbé.
Cette plante croît naturellement à la Chine. Q .
