couchées, & longues de cinq à feptpouces. Ses
feuilles font compofées de fix ou fept paires de
folioles^ lancéolées, pointues , & glabres dans leur
parfait développement. A la bafè de leur pétiole
commun, on obforve deux ftipules amplexicaules
& ovalès-obuifes. Les fleurs font d’un blanc jaunâtre
, avec une teinte de violet à l’extrémité de
leur carène, & viennent en épi fur des pédonr
cules communs , axillaires, 8c deux fois plus
longs que les feuilles. Elles font feffiles , & pro-
duiiènt des gouttes véficulaires , demi - ovales ,
pédiculées dans leur calice , terminées par un
filet court 8c crochu , parfaitement uniloculaires ,
glabres & point pendantes. Elles contiennent cinq
ou fix petites femences. Cette plante croît dans
les montagnes de la Provence , de l’Italie 8c de
la Suifle : on la cultive au Jardin du Roi. *ÇÎ, ( V. V. )
BAJA , Enc. Nom Brame d’une plante du Malabar
, gravée par Rhéede au Vol. 8 , planche 27,
page 51 , de fon Hortus Malabaricus , fous le
nom de Kudici-valli y 8c qui, par fa fruâification ,
femble être une véritable efpèce de Liferon •, mais
qui, félon Rhéede, porte des vrilles fituées à
l’oppofé des feuilles , 8c nous fait prélumer de-là
qu’elle doit être d’un genre différent, les Life*
rons connus n’ayant jamais de vrilles.
C’eft une herbe vivace dont les tiges font très-
menues , cylindriques , dures, 8c paroiflent grimpantes.
Ses feuilles font alternes, pétiolées , partagées
en trois ou cinq lobes, dont le terminal
eft lancéolé, un peu échancrées en coeur à leur
bafo , minces , lifles , 8c d’un verd brun : elles
font accompagnées de vrilles fimples qui fo contournent
en fpirale. Les fleurs font axillaires, &
viennent fur. des pédoncules rameux , un pèu^plus
longs que les feuilles. Elles ont un calice moho-
phylle à cinq divifions pointues -, une corolle moV
nopétale-campanulée , ftriéè dans, fa longueur,
légèrement crénélée en Ton bord, colorée d’un
beau jaune en fon limbe , & feulement d’un verd
blanchâtre dans fa partie inférieure -, cinq étamines
plus courtes que la corolle, & un ovaire
qui paroît fupérieur, & d’où s’élève un ftyle
menu , terminé par un ftigmate en tête & bifide.
Leur fruit eft une capfule courte, globuleufe , à
quatre angles arrondis , & divifé intérieurement
eh quatre loges difpermes. Cette plante croît fur
la côte du Malabar, & fleurit en Septembre ,
Oétob're & Novembre.

en général à un fruit mou 8c pulpeux, qui contient
une ou plufieurs femences. La Baie proprement
dite eft une efpèce de péricarpe d’une forme
ordinairement arrondie ou ovale, mou dans fa
maturité , ce qui la diftingue principalement de la
Pomette ( Pomiim ) , & qui ne s’ouvre point naturellement.
