de plante à fleurs monopétalées , de la famille des
Rubiacées , qui a des rapports avec les Morindes,
le Nauclé 8c le Carapiche , 8c qui comprend des
arbuftes ou des arbrifleaux exotiques, dont les
feuilles font Amples & oppofées , & dont les fleurs
très-petites , font difpofées en boule fur un réceptacle
commun , globuleux 8c pédoncule.
C a r a c t è r e g é n é r i q u e .
Chaque fleur confifte i*. en un petit calice
monophylle, fupérieur , & à quatre divifions ;
a0, en une corolle monopétale , infurtdibuliforme,
dont le tube très-grêle & beaucoup plus long
que le calice , s’évafe en un limbe partagé en
quatre découpures; 30. en quatre étamines fort
courtes, dont les filamens attachés au tube de la
corolle , portent des anthères globuleufes non
faillantes hors de la fleur ; 40. en un ovaire inférieur
, d’où s’élève dans la fleur un ftyle plus long
que la corolle, terminé par un ftigmate en tête.
Le fruit eft une petite capfule oblongue , en
jmafliie , amincie vers fa bafe, prefque tétragône ,
biloculaire , & qui contient une femence oblongue
dans chaque loge. Ces capfules font group-
pées en boule, fur un réceptacle commun globuleux
8c velu.

C’eft un arbrifleau qui s’élève à la hauteur de
cinq à fept pieds, & dont la tige eft un peu ra-
meufe , foible, cylindrique, grifeâtre , 8c feuillée
dans la plus grande partie de fa longueur. Ses
feuilles font oppofées, quelquefois ternées, pétio-
lées , ovales, pointues , entières , molles , 8c glabres
en deflus ; les nervures de leur furface inférieure
ayant quelquefois des poils courts, ainfi
que les pétioles. Les fleurs font blanchâtres , &
difpofées au fommet de la plante en boules pédon-
çulées, hériffées par les ftyles, 8c au nombre de
trois ou cinq ou fept, &c. formant une efpèce de
grappe terminale, dont les divifions font oppofées.
Cet arbrifleau croît dans l’Amérique fepten-
trionale, & eft cultivé au Jardin du Roi. "fr .
