i) Die Arten der Section A^oi/io/ai/ws weichen durch mehrere hervorragende Merkmale
von den Arten der nördlichen Hemisphäre ab, namentlich durch die viel kleineren
Hüllen des Fruchtstandes und kürzere Griffel; es ist daher sehr fraglich , ob Nothofagus
nur als eine Abzweigung der die nordischen Arten umfassenden Gattung Fagus anzusehen
ist und ob nicht vielmehr Fagus und Nothofagus gleichwerthige, einem gemeinsamen
Stamm entsprungene Gruppen darstellen. Der Ursprung beider dürfte vielleicht im indischen
Archipel zu suchen sein, wo wir alle, auch anderswo fehlende Sectionen der
Gattung Quercus, sowie Castanopsis, an welche sich Castanea anschliesst, vertreten finden.
Es wird dies auch dadurch wahrscheinlich, dass eine Art, F. Moorei, noch in Neu-Süd-
Wales vorkommt ,das ja jetzt noch so viele Formen mit dem indischen Archipel gemein hat.
