fa&urus effet in Illyricum, Honorii lite-
ris eft retentus. Poft obitum vero Arcadii,
Honorius quidem, ut fratris filio con-
fuleret, Conftantinopolim proficifci decre-
verat, & fidos illic Comités conftituere,
qui falutem & Imperium pupilli confer-
varent. Nam cum illum filii loco habe-
ret, verebatur ne quid ei accideret, quip-
pe qui ob teneram ætatem infidiis obno-
xius effet. Verum cum jam iter arreptu-
rus effet, perfuafit ei Stilico ut in Italia
remaneret: neceffarium id effe affirmans,
propterea quod Conftantinus quidam Arelate
tyrannidem paulo antea invafiffet. Ipfe
vero altero ex fceptris quod Romani La-
barum vocant, accepto, una cum Impera-
toris literis, quibus Orientalis expeditio
ipfi committçbatur, proficifci jam para-
bat, fumptis fecum quatuor legionibus. Inter
hæc vero, cum rumor fparfus effet illum
Imperatori infidias ftrueré, & adfcitis in
focietatem potentibus, filio fuo Imperium
parare , milites feditione faila, Præfecftum
Prætorio Italiæ, & Præfe&um Prætorio
Galli arum,- fimul Magiftros militum,.&
reliquos qui in palatio præcipuas digni-
tates gerebant, interficiunt. Ipfê quoque
Stilico à militibus occifus eft Ravenna? :
vir, fi quis unquam, ad magnam poten-
tiam evedhis, & qui univerfos, ut ita
dicam, Romanos ac Bgrbaros jfibi parentes
