419. The principal gardens in Denmark arc the royal gardens, near Copenhagen hut
tliere arc many noblenicu and gentlemen’s ¡daces, throughout the kingdom, beuiitiiVilly
situated, and kept in good order. Tbe gardens of Marienlust, near Elsinore, wliieli are
said to occ.iiiiy tho sumo s]>aee as those in whieh Hamlet’s father was nnirdcred, aud those
of rrin c e Frederick, near the city, may be considered the Greenwieh and Hyde Park of
Copenhagen, llirselifeld mentions Aslibcrg, on tho lake Picon, as ono of the iliiest
rosidenees in Denmark in his tim e ; and enumerates nearly a dozen others as scats of
great beauty.
420. Frederiksberg (^fig. 127.), his Danish majesty’s smnnier residence, about two
miles from Copciiha'geii, is a most dcligbtful ¡ihicc. The extensive palace is situated on
a hill ¡11 tlic ¡ilcasuve-ground, from wliich is a beautiful view over the greater part of
Copenlingcn and some ¡>avt of the Sound, '.riic ¡deasurc-grotmd is extensive, and was
originally laid out in tho Dutch inauner. About twenty years since, it was, liowevcr,
laid out in the English style, by the late M. Voigt, aial inq)rovemcnt.s continue to
be made, to a certain extent, every year. I t is now one of tlic most celebrated in
Denmark. A iino canal runs tlirough the garden, over which arc several liandsoiuc
bridges, and (here is a beautiful little island, called the Chinese Island, besides many
other garden seeucs, which add greatly to its natural beauty. During all the smnnier
season, tiio garden is open to tlie public from early in tbe morning till late at night.
The forcing department, kitchcn-garden, orchard, &c., are very extensive, aiul arc kept
in good oriler. (Feldborg’s Denmark, &.C., Gard. vol. i. ¡). 270.) Sondermarkcii,
a beautiful and extensive park, belongs to this palace, and is situated near i t ; it is
devoted exclusively to the royal family, aud is more like a pleasure-ground than a park.
A plan ( fg . 126.) of the garden at Frederiksberg, taken in 1831, has been kindly
furnished us by our esteemed friend, M. Petersen.

421. The royal gardens o f Rosenborg, near Copenhagen, arc particnlariy remarkable
for tlicir extensive'and well-managed iorcing-groand ; in wliich are grown fniits for the
royal table, and select flowers. Here is tlic finest and most extensive orangciy m
Denmark; and the licst managed peach trees and vines, both iu hothouses and m the
open air. The gardens of Rosenborg, like those of Frederiksberg, are open every day
in tho year for respectable-looking people. During the summer season, there is music
in both gardens oncc a week, perfbi-mcd by military bands, at tho king’s expcnft. A
plan of these gardens (fig. 128.) was taken in 1830 by an mtclhgcnt coiTCspondwit oi
the Gardener’s Magazine, a gardener, who in point of general aequircmcnts, aud professional
knowledge, may he ranked with any young horticulturist in Europe, and
forwarded to us expressly for this work. Like imiuy other plans on a small scale, ot
first-ratc gardens, it oilers notliing particularly attractive wlftii viewed as a p ic tu re; but,
in the reality, the great variety of the surface, and the skilful distribution ot the trees,
render it eminently interesting.
