Arbre moins élevé que le précédent, dépassant rarement 28" de hauteur
sur 2",80 de circonférence. Se distingue de son congénère par sa tige
moins régulière, recouverte d’un rhytidome plus fibreux, moins écailleux
ou subéreux, pa r sa cime plus étalée, moins touffue (v. phot. n» 128), ses
rameaux plus gros et ses feuilles plus grandes, 12-18™ sur 6-8 de lùrge,
très rudes en dessus, longuement et étroitement acuminées, pubescentes
en dessous aux nervures et peu barbues aux aisselles. Jeunes pousses
v elues. Fleurs à 8-8 étamines; samares plus grandes, ovales ou orbiculaires,
(i graines centrales, n ’atteignant p a s l'échancrure; aWe de consistance plus
molle, herbacée, chiffonnée et plus ou moins verte.
L aire géographique de cette espèce est à peu près la même que celle de
1 U. campestris, mais elle habite de préférence les régions montagneuses
où elle se trouve souvent en forêts, en mélange avec les Chênes, les Hêtres
et inême les Sapins. Elle recherche de préférence les terrains légers et frais,
et ne drageonne pas. Son bois, plus riche en aubier et à grain plus gros-
smr, est beaucoup moins estimé; les charrons le désignent sous le nom
A’Orme blanc et refusent de l’employer. Par conireVO. des montagnes esl
beaucoup plus ornemental que son congénère.
