Thallus effuse, thinnish, granuloso-leprose, greenish-yellow. Apotheoia
small, scattered ; stipes short, hlaok.
The colour of the thallus, if not ahnormal, would render this a very
distinct variety. The apothecia are smaller and usually more slender
than in var. lenticulare, but in other respects quite similar.

As indicated by Nylander (I. c.),most probably a subspecie.s of C. ?»er-
cinum, differing- in the short stipes and in the marginal prmna. The
apothecia, sometimes nearly sessile, are numerous and ciowded.

Looks like a minute variety of C. quercinwn, but is constant to its own
tvpe. Analogous modifications occur in almost all the other spccms>
tlfu g h usually on the same plant as then- types. Ih e very few Bi tish
.«peehnens have the thallus obsolete and apothecia minute and scattered.

The most common of the British Caliciei, and often spreads extensively
thongli sometimes the thallus is evanescent. Irom C. quercmum it
