T h e rearrangement of the British Lichens in th e He rb arium of the
British Museum and the incorporation of a g re at series of specimens
made a revised Catalogu. of these plants a necessity.
The large number of au th en tic specimens from DiUenius, Hudson,
Sowerby, Dawson Turner, T. Taylor, Salwey, Mudd, and Leighton
contained in th e Herbarium supplied material for determining the
species of these lichenologists which does no t exist elsewhere ; while
th e extensive series of B ritish Lichens, including th e collections of
Buddie, E. Fo rste r, E . Brown, Carroll, Piggot, Holl, Crombie, and
Larbalestier, made it possible to determine with certainty the
geographical d istribution of the species within the British Islands.
The Rev. J . M. Crombie, M.A., undertook the preparation of a
Monograph based on these materials. This volume contains descriptions
of half th e known British species. The remainder (consisting
of th e Lecideei, Graphidoi, Pyrenooarpei, Peridiei, and Myriangiaoei)
IS so advanced th a t it may be expected to appear in 1895, and
will contain a complete index to th e genera and species of the
whole work.
