ROOT perennial' branched, fomewhat woody, with
difficulty pulled up.
STA LK a foot or more in height, round, fimple or
branched, roughs above flaked of leaves,
and downy below, dotted with black and
hifpid : the hairs whitifh.
LEAVES oppofite, hifpid, pointed ; the lower ones
entire, of an oval oblong ffiape, remotely fer-
rated ; the upper ones leffile, embracing the
Italic, and pinnatifid; the fegments liftear,oppo-
lite, Ilightly ferrated, the middle fegment twice
the lize of the others, lanceolate, tapering at
each extremity, and ferrated in the middle.
FLOWERS terminal, Handing on long foot-ftalks.
CA L YX common to all the. Jlorets compofed of many
leaves, imbricated, the leaves ovate, pointed,
downy, edged with hairs, flat ahd fpreading;
the innermoft fomewhat the fmalleft.
COROLLA compound, hemifpherical, of a pale violet
colour, radiate; the florets in the cir'cum-
■ ference tubular, the length of the calyx, villous
within, divided into four fegments which
are upright, oblong, obtufe, and unequal; the
■ outermoft fomewhat the largeft ; the two fide
ones oppofite, and equal, the innermoft twice
as fmall, Jig. 1 .; the central Jlorets fmaller,
the mouth divided into four, obtufe, unequal
fegments.
STAMINA: F i l a m e n t s four, tapering, growing to
the lower part of the tube of the corolla, and
of the fame length as the corolla. A n th er s

PISTILLUM: G e r m e n below the corolla, four-
cornered, covered with numerous ftiffith
hairs, and crowned with a bell-ffiaped pappus
formed of numerous alh-coloured briftles.
