This is found in the neighbourhood of the river Miffijfipi, and
is faid to ling very agreeably, though much louder than the Scarlet
Tanager. It is faid to colled againft winter a quantity of
maize; and is fo careful of its hoard, as feldom to flir from the
place where it has ftored it up, except to drink : and the quantity
has been known to equal a bulhel. It fecures this winter-
magazine by covering it with dry leaves, only leaving a hole for
itfelf to enter *.

C I Z E of the laft. Bill brown : the whole plumage variegated
with crimfon and greenifh buff-çolour ; the laft occupying in
patches the nape of the neck, the whole of the wing, lower part
of the back', and middle of the belly : the tail is half crimfon and
half greenifh buff : legs pale brown.
This and the former feem to be the fame bird in diffèrent periods
of age. It is moft likely that the laft-defcribed is the
young bird, though the circumftance has not yet been confirmed
by obfervation.
