g I Z E o f a Chaffinch: length feven inches and a quarter;
weight three quarters o f an ounce. Bill fleffi-colour : on the
crown a white ft ripe., which does not quite reach the b i l l : on
each fide o f this Is a fbripe o f b la c k ; over the eyes a line o f
white, which paffes to the vertical ftripe behind : neck cin e reous,
paleft on the breaft : b a ck ferruginous brown : rump c inereous
b row n : the feathers edged with cinereous: wings
brown ; the outer edge o f the prime quills very pale ; the infides
cinereous: acrofs the wings two bands o f w h ite : the baftard
wing wh ite : the under parts are w h ite : the breaft a ffi-co lo u r :
vent and thighs yellow : tail brown, even at the en d ; legs fleffi-
colour.
T h e female is lik e the male.
T h is fpecies inhabits Canada, and viftts Severn :Settlement in
June: it is alfo met with at Albany Fort in May ; where it Hays
the fummer, and departs in September. I t makes the neft in the
bottom o f willows, and lays three chocolate-coloured egg£ : the
ch ie f food is feeds o f grafs, worms, grubs, & c .

o f the fame on the w in g : quills brown, with white edges : fecondaries
brow n; within ferruginous: cheeks and throat b la c k ;
breaft and belly yellow ; acrofs the breaft a ferruginous crefcent:
under tail coverts white : tail a little forked, brow n; the two
outer feathers have a longitudinal ftripe o f white on the inner
w e b : legs dirty white.
T h e female has the crown blacker, and the margins o f the T ewatse,
feathers on the back more h o a ry ; ofherwife like the male.
Inhabits the pine forefts o f Catharinejburgh. A lfo met with on
the poplars and willows in the iflands o f the Irtijh, and other
rivers in Sibiria. Found alfo in Kamtfchatka.
T h e fong is much lik e that o f the Reed Sparrow.
