D escription. /rT AHIS fpecies is green gold above, as the lad; and' beneath
"*■ grey brown. The bill is feven lines and a half long, and
black : the tail has the lower half the colour of the back ; the end:
half purple black ; the fide feathers grey1 at the tips : the legs are
feathered to the toes with grey brown ; and the toes and claws,
are black.

with a black tip : the upper parts of the body are of a dull
brown, with a mixture of yellowiih brown: the under parts pale
chednut, marked with fome blackilh fpots on the bread : on each
fide of the head is a longitudinal band of dull brown, placed beneath
the eyes: the two middle tail feathers are brown; the fide
ones violet brown : legs and claws black. Edwards obferves
that, contrary to all others of the genus, it has not the lead firming
ludre on any part of its plumage.

n p H IS , fays Marcgrave, is the mod beautiful of all the Hum-
ming-birds: total length three inches four lines. Bill eight
lines long, and blackilh : the top of the head, and hind part of
the neck, are as bright as a ruby, and of the fame colour: the
upper parts of the body are brown *, with a faint mixture of
green gold : the throat, and fore part of the neck, are the colour
of the mod brilliant topaz: the belly, fides, and thighs, are
brown; but on the lower part of the belly, on each fide, is a
fpot of white: the tail is rufous purple, inclining to violet at

Ftrmin calls the colour of the body a deep red, and that of the tail orange.
