Surinam, hut the Weft India colonies in general, might
accumulate wealth to themfelyes, and promote the permanent
liappirrefs o f the Haves that are.under their fub-
je6tion, without having recourse t o o f Guinea to
fupply the almoft hourly eo^Iumpfion o f: that tunfortu*-
nate people. But before I proceed, it will be necefiTary
to Rate the manner in which the negro
buted and treated, by thp cuftoms o f this‘Settlement
only, without adverting to the diftribnfeion or government
of them in other colonies ; from which, hp.wevgFj
thofe may equally derive fome profit ;-^-and th ^ t j fljall
endeavour to point out how, in my opinion,, theyt ou£pt
to -be diftrihuted and treated, accpiding to the,.laws,.pot
only o f humanity but o f common fenfe.
I have before obferved that in Surinam tbpre. are;|upT
pofed to be on an average about 75,000 negro fiavp§ p f alldenomination
s, which (allowing them,, for a
round number, to amount to 80,000) are here; diftri?
buted in the following extraordinary manner,, v m .The
plantations, being about 800 in number, though fome
have but 24 negroes, and others 400, we will fuppofe
them to poffefs 100 Haves each, which complement is
exadtly the above number pf 80,000 people. Thefe are
employed in this fettlement as follows; the firft column
o f figures alluding to one eftate, thefecond ditto to eight
hundred.
