the angles membranous and winged. Style filiform, the
branches linear, truncate, recurved, marked with a shallow
furrow above; those of the hermaphrodite florets slightly
papillose at the apex. Achenia cuneate, triquetrous, with
three broad, membranous, transparent angles, forming at the
top an oblique, irregularly lobed crown.
This elegant shrubby species has been but very recently
introduced to our collection by Mr. Webb, from Madeira.
It appears to be distinct from the various shrubby sj)ecies,
natives of the Canary Islands, and hitherto referred by
authors to Pyrethrmn, but which will all doubtless range
under the present genus, which is well characterised by its
winged fruit, terminated by a large membranous crown.
Drawn at the Chelsea Botanic Garden in April last. The
plant will require to be protected in a frame or in the greenhouse
in winter, and it should be grown in a light sandy soil.
It may be increased both by cuttings and seeds.
The genus was founded by Cassini, who applied to it the
name of Ismelia, of the meaning of which we are not
informed. D . Don.
1. Ray-floret. 2. Floret of the disk.
