CUPHEA. Calyx tubulosus basi superiore gibbus limbo ampliatua, dentibus
6 erectis, sinubus 6 mine productis parvis nunc obsoletis. Petala 6-7
inæqualia. Stamina 11-14, rariùs 6-7 fauci calycis inserta inæqualia.
Gianduia crassa sub ovario. Stylus filiformis. Stigma simplex aut sub-
bifidum. Capsula membranacea calyce obtecta ] -2-locularis, demùm per
placentam deflexam simul cum calyce fissa. Semina suborbiculata compressa
aptera.
Herbæ aut Suffrutices. Folla apposita rariùs verticillata integerrima. Pedunculi
interpetiolares uni-aut rariùs multiflori. Flores sæpiùs cernui.

Obs. Fructus in hoc genere monocarpellaris ; carpellum anterius adest tantùm
fertile, altero (posteriore) abortienti glanduliformi, et absdubio causa floris

The whole plant copiously clothed with soft clammy
purple hairs, and emitting a powerful balsamic odour. Root
fibrous, annual. Stem erect, branched, cylindrical, purplish.
Branches ascending. Leaves opposite, lanceolate, obtuse,
slightly waved, entire, two inches long, pale green on both
sides, attenuated at the base. Petioles very short, semicylindrical.
Flowers interpetiolary, solitary, pedunculate, declinate.
Peduncle filiform, about three or four lines long,
bibracteate at the middle. Bractes small, linear-spathulate,
leafy. Calyx about an inch long, tubular, purple, marked
with ten deeper-coloured ribs, hairy and clammy, furnished
at the upper base with a very short rounded sp u r; limb
campanulate, lined with white hairs, with six teeth, of which
five are ovate, acute, equal and connivent, and the upper
one, being the sixth, very large, ovate, coloured, with a
callous p o in t; sinuses produced into six short, cylindrical,
blunt, erect, green teeth. Petals six, very dark purple.
