shaggy hairs. Anthers blue, incumbent, composed of two
distinct parallel cells. Ovarium ovate, bristly, almost 2-
celled, with many ovules on each placenta. Style filiform,
bristly, cloven for about a third of its length, the branches
filiform, glabrous above. Stigma a very minute dot.
This very beautiful hardy annual was introduced by the
Horticultural Society in 1826, from seeds transmitted by the
late Mr. Douglas, by whom they were collected during his
botanical researches on the hanks of the Columbia in Northwest
America, growing abundantlyin sandy exposed situations.
The plant should be cultivated therefore in a light soil and
in a sunny situation, for under such circumstances it will he
most likely to perfect its seeds freely. Our drawir^ was

The generic name refers to the number of seeds borne by
each placenta, a character which chiefly distinguishes it
from Nemophila, and is derived from euro/coy, fruitful.
