Tills remarkable species which combines entirely the habit
of the group Petunia, with the corolla of the normal Nierem-
bergicB, was gathered by Mr. Tweedie, on the banks of the
river Uruguay in the Republic of Buenos Ayres, and from
seeds transmitted by him the plant was raised in the Botanic
Garden at Glasgow in 1834. The plant has been found to
thrive best in a mixture of sandy peat and loam, and it is
readily increased by cuttings. It succeeds well in the open
border during the summer months, and although apparently
only of annual duration, it will continue to flourish for
several successive years, if kept in the greenhouse during
the winter. We are indebted to our friend, Mr. James
Macnab, for the very beautiful drawing represented in our
plate. I t was taken from a plant that blossomed in Dr.
Neill’s collection at Canonmills, near Edinburgh, in September
last.
For the meaning of the generic name, see fol. 172.
