P lan t perennial, tufted. Stems many, erect, mostly one-
flowered, two or three inches high, glabrous, furnished with
two or three pair of leaves, the uppermost pair of which is
contiguous to the flower. Leaves narrow strap-shaped, obtuse,
or more rarely linear and acute, plain and even, ’o-labrous
and green, about an inch long. Flowers solitary, terminal,
large and showy. Calycine scales 2, lanceolate,’acuminate,
leafy. Calyx tubular, ventricose, smooth, of a dark
jurple, rather shorter than the scales; teeth ovate-lanceo-
ate, acute, erect, the border white and scariose. Petals the
lamina broadly obcordate, crenated, imbricating, yellowish
grey beneath, reddish purple or lilac above, copiously
bearded and furnished with a dark purple spot at the base
which IS frequently variegated with white; claws cuneately
linear, white, about as long as the calyx. Stamens 10, unequal.
Filaments white. Anthers violet. Ovarium obiono-
unilocular. Styles 2, longer than the stamens, exserted’
recurved, and bearded along their inner side.
