ibs. Petioles almost filiform, but slightly angular, and
depressed above, 2 or 5 inches long. Racemes terminal, stiff,
from 3 to 6 inches long. Flowers semi-douhle, of a deep
azure blue. Pedicels an inch long, erect, rather incurved,
stiff cylindrical, thickened at the top, and clothed with short
crisped white hairs. Sepals ovate-oblong bluntly acuminate,
finely fringed. Petals broad, ovate-dolabriform, wavy,
blunt, entire, bearded above. Filaments membranous, gla brous
channelled, widened and white below. _ A n hers dark
purple, of two parallel cells. Ovarms \0 m the present
varietft but n o i4 a lly 3 , glossy, mmntely dotted, and beautifully
marked with elevated dark purple vems. Styles awl-
shaped, pale purple, about half the length of the ovaries.
Stimna bilabiate, with two, short, rounded lobes.
A double variety of one of the finest species of the genus.
I t is a most lovely plant, the flowers being equal in size to
those of the double variety of grandtflorum, and of a still
richer colour. A mixture of peat and loam will be found to
suit it best, and it is increased by parting the roots. _
Our drawing was taken from the collection of Messieurs
Allen and Rogers at Battersea, in June last.
The generic name is derived from Delphinus, a dolphin,
and ailudes to some fanciful resemblance between the flowers
