The whole plant sparingly pubescent, and of a light
green. Root fibrous, annual. Stem erect, branched, varying
from a span to two feet in height. Leaves deeply pinnatifid,
the segments cuneately oblong, entire, or furnished
with two opposite teeth, attenuated and stipitate at the base,
the terminal one larger ; radical ones lyrate, with broader
segments. Petioles an inch long, laterally compressed,
slightly channelled above, and obtusely keeled below. Racemes
terminal, many-flowered. Flowers pale purple, about the
size of those of the Virginian stock. Calyx slightly pubescent,
closed, of four oblong, obtuse, connivent sepals. Petals 4 ;
claws linear ; yellowish white, as long as the sepals ; lamina
obcordate, spreading, marked with deeper coloured veins.
Stamens 6, two outer ones shorter. Filaments white, compressed,
glabrous, toothless. Anthers linear, bilocular, yellow.
Ovarium sessile, oblong, flat, rough with minute dots,
contracted at the base. Style short, but distinct. Stigma of
two connate lobes. Silicula elliptical oblong, mucronate,
with the persistent style, flat, unilocular, nearly an inch and
