Among the several varieties of Symphytum officinale this
is certainly the most distinct, and the only one entitled to a
place in the flower border, for which its dwarf habit and
copious crimson blossoms render it very suitable. Three
varieties occur wild in this country, but the one now before
us appears to be peculiar to Bohemia. It will grow’ in almost
any kind of soil, and is easily increased by dividing the
roots.
Onr drawing was taken from a plant which flowered in
the Chelsea Botanic Garden in May last.
The generic name will be found explained at folio 294.
