pale-purple, with 2 parallel, distinct cells, united at the
middle by a small connectivum. Ovarium bilocular, surrounded
at the base by a fleshy yellow ring, with 2 prominent
angles. Placentæ 2, fleshy, green. Ovula numerous,
white. Style slender, filiform, about the length of the longer
pair of stamens, pale green, thickened upwards. Stigma
 peltate, green and viscid above.
A great variety of hybrids have been lately obtained from
the intermixture of N . phoenicea and nyctaginiflora, and all
of them proving fertile, and affording seeds much more
abundantly than phoenicea. The present very pretty variety
is the offspring of one of these, and was raised by Mr. Rogers
at Battersea, where our drawing was taken in July. _ Like
the others of this group it grows and flowers freely in the
open border, and is readily increased by cuttings.
For the meaning of the generic name, see fol. 172.
