P. caryophyllaceum, caule suffruticoso squamoso, foliis
ternatis trifidisve pulverulento-pilosis; foliolissinuato-
lobatis acutis* inciso-dentatis; stipulis ovatis acutis, pe-
dunculis multifloris, petalis superioribus cuneatis, tubo
neetarifero calyce subaequali v. parum breviore.

Root tuberous. Stem suffruticose, short, branched, very
rough and scaly, and of very irregular growth. Leaves ter-
nate or trifid, deeply cut and toothed, clothed with a short
mealy pubescence, and with short hairs on both sides; leaflets
or segments undulate, acute, spreading, more or less
crumpled, and the old leaves blistered or rugose, clove-
scented. Petioles rather slender, nearly cylindrical, thickly
clothed with unequal spreading white hairs, as are the peduncles,
bractes, and calyx. Stipules ovate, acute, villous,
and fringed. Peduncles cylindrical. Umbels many flowered.
Involucre of from 6 to 8 ovately lanceolate, taper-
pointed, fringed bractes. Pedicles about the length of or a
little longer than the bractes. Calyx 5-cleft, segments lanceolate,
taper-pointed, spreading. Nectariferous tube about
the length of, or scarcely so long as the calyx. Petals 5, of
a pale lilac; the two upper ones wedge-shaped, with 2 small
purple spots in each, a little below the centre, and a strong
forked nerve at the back : lower petals ligulate, two-nerved
at the back. Filaments 10, connected at the base, 7 bearing
anthers, which are always sterile. Style purple, thickly
clothed all over with rigid hairs. Stigmas 5, purple, revolute,
and fimbriate on the upper side.
