V. obcordatum, caule raraoso diffuso: ramis petiolis pe-
dunculis calycibusque villosis, foliis- cordatis oblongis
sinuato-septemlobis undulatis dentatis utrinque hirsutis:
lobis acutis subplicatis, umbellis plurifloris, petalis su-
peris obcordatis, tubo nectarifero calyce reflexo sub-
aequali v. paullo longiore.

Stem shrubby, branched: branches spreading, thickly
clothed with unequal spreading villous hairs, as are the petioles,
peduncles, and calyx. Leaves cordate, oblong, si-
nuately 7 or more times lobed, very much undulate, rather
bluntly toothed, roughish, hairy on both sides, more or less
stained with brown in the centre: lobes acute, more or less
plaited. Petioles broadly flattened on the upper side and
convex on the lower, thickened at the base, thickly clothed
with unequal villous hairs. Stipules broadly lanceolate,
acute, villous and fringed. Peduncles cylindrical, villous,
several-flowered. Involucre of about 6 lanceolate, acute,
fringed, villous bractes. Pedicles unequal in length, seldom
longer than the bractes, villous. Calyx 5-cleft, segments
reflexed, villous, the upper one broadest, ovately lanceolate,
3-nerved, the others broadly lanceolate. Petals 5, with
long unguis, the two upper ones imbricate, obcordate, of a
dark scarlet, with a large velvetty patch in the centre, and
numerous dark purple lines from the base, which branch
in all directions, underneath strongly 2-nerved • lower
petals narrower, oblongly obovate, strongly 2-nerved, of a
paler colour. Filaments 10, united at the base, 7 bearing
anthers.. Style flesh-coloured, very hairy at the base, and
smooth upwards. Stigmas 5, reflexed.
