unequal sided, of a bright red, white at the base, with a large
dark spot in the centre; below which, and from it, are numerous
dark lines, that are slightly branched, underneath
strongly 2-nerved, the nerves branching; lower petals of a
lighter colour, 4 to 5-nerved at the; back. Filaments 10,
connected at the base, 7 bearing anthers, which have always
been imperfect in the flowers we have examined. Style
dark purple, hairy above half way up, the upper part smooth. Stigmas 5, purple, revolute, and fimbriate on the upper
side.
Our drawing of this fine plant was made in August last,
when it was in full bloom, in the superb collection of R. H.
Jenkinson, Esq. where it was first raised from seed. It is
of hybrid origin, and appears to be nearly intermediate between
P. macranthon and one of the dark red sorts, but its
real origin is not easily to be determined. Being a very
strong vigorous growing sort, it requires plenty of room,
and a rich light soil; it will then thrive well, and produce its
flowers in abundance all the Summer. Cuttings of it will
strike root freely, planted in pots, and.placed in a sheltered
situation; it may also be increased by cuttings of the roots.
