Various-lobed Stork's-bill.
P. diversilobum, ramis pedunculis calycibusque villosis,
foliis 3-7-lobis acute dentatis hirsutis, stipulis late ova-
tis dentatis ciliatis, umbellis 3-5-floris, petalis cuneatis,
tubo nectarifero calyce paulo breviore.
Stem frutescent, branching: branches spreading, thickly
clothed with long villous white hairs, as are the petioles,
peduncles, and calyx. Leaves variable, covered with short
hairs on both sides, very sharply toothed, the teeth unequal
in size, strongly nerved underneath, the nerves much branched
: lower leaves 7-lobed, broader than long at the base,
nearly flat or slightly undulate; lobes large and spreading,
the larger ones overlapping each other; middle leaves
5-lobed, the lobes more distinct: upper ones 3-lobed, the
middle lobe largest and obovate. Petioles flattened on the
upper side and rounded on the lower. Stipules broadly
ovate, toothed, villous and ciliate. Peduncles cylindrical,
3 to 5-flowered. Involucre of 6 broadly ovate acute villous
bractes. Pedicles about the length of or a little longer
than the bractes. Calyx 5-cleft, the segments lanceolate,
acute, erect, the upper one largest. Nectariferous tube
flat on each side, villous, scarcely so long as the calyx. Petals 5, cuneate, of a light salmon colour, the two upper
ones double the size of the others, strongly nerved at the
back, stained with bright red in the centre, on which is a
dark velvet murk, below which are some short broad dark
lines, a little branched. Filaments 10, united at the base,
7 bearing anthers, which are always sterile. Ovarium villous.
Style very hairy about half way up, the upper part
smooth. Stigmas dark purple, revolute.
