P. conclausum, caule suffruticoso rugoso, foliis pinnatifi-
dis pinnatisque pilosis: foliolis oppositis alternisque
subsessilibus pinnatifido-lobatis inaequaliter obtuse den-
tatis, scapo folioso subramoso, umbellis multifloris, pe-
talis inferioribus concavis conniventibus: superioribus
cuneatis subemarginatis.
Root tuberous, branching. Stem short and succulent,
rugged, with few short branches. Leaves variable, pinnate,
or pinnatifid, thickly clothed with short hairs, and longer
ones intermixed: leaflets or segments opposite, or sometimes
alternate, sessile or nearly so, short and broad, pinnatifid or
deeply lobed, unequally toothed with blunt rounded teeth,
the edges fringed with hairs. Petioles flattened on the upper
side and rounded on the lower, thickly clothed with unequal
woolly hairs, as are the scapes, peduncles, calyx, and
nectariferous tube. Stipules broadly lanceolate, acute,
fringed, joined to the base of the peduncles. Scape branched,
leafy, producing several umbels of flowers. Peduncles cylindrical,
long, stoutish. Umbels many-flowered. Involucre
of several lanceolate, acute, fringed bractes. Pedicles shorter
than the bractes. Calyx 5-cleft; the upper segment largest,
erect, broadly lanceolate, concave, scarcely acute; the others
narrower, reflexed. Nectariferous tube nearly double the
length of the calyx, of a brownish purple. Petals 5, the two
upper ones narrow at the base, wedge-shaped, slightly emar-
ginate, of a dark crimson, inclining to purple, with two white
lines near the base, and numerous dark stripes which branch
nearly all over the petals: 3 lower ones roundly obovate,
roncave, closed up, so as sometimes to hide the stamens! Filaments 10, united at the base, ascending, 7 bearing anthers.
Style purple. Stigmas 5, purple,lute. reflexed or revoVOL.
