PELARGONIUM ligulatum.
Ligulate-petaled Stork's-bill.
P. ligulatum, subcaulescens, foliis pinnatis pinnatifidisque
pilosis : foliolis segmentisque pinnatifido-laciniatis inse-
qualiter obtuse dentatis, scapo flexuoso ramoso, umbellis
multifloris, petalis ligulatis, tubo nectarifero calyce ses-
quilongiore.

Root tuberous. Stem very short and succulent, rough
and scaly. Leaves growing close together, pinnate or pin-
natifid, thickly covered with long spreading hairs: leaflets
or segments opposite, rather distant, pinnatifid or laciniate,
the divisions toothed or incised, bluntish. Petioles a little
flattened on the upper side and rounded on the lower, vil-
losely hairy. Stipules broadly lanceolate, acute, hairy and
fringed, joined to the base of the petioles. Scape short and
stout, flexuose, branching, villosely hairy, and producing
small leaves at the base of the peduncles. Peduncles bent,
ascending, rather succulent, villosely hairy. Umbels many
flowered. Involucre of numerous linearly lanceolate taper-
pointed, ciliated bractes. Pedicles none, or very short. Calyx 5-cleft, segments long, lanceolate, acute, the upper
one much the largest, erect, the others reflexed, all thickly
clothed with spreading villous hairs. Nectariferous tube
slender at the base and gradually widening upwards, of a
brownish purple, hairy, about half as long again as the
calyx. Petals 5, ligulate or strap-shaped, the upper ones
rather the longest, lower ones divaricately spreading, all of
a. bright scarlet, the upper ones marked with a few branching
lines near the base. Filaments 10, united at the base, very
unequal in length, 7 bearing anthers. Style short, purple. Stigmas 5, purple, reflexed. VOL. iv. B
