Stemless. Root tuberous. Leaves variable, clothed with
long white hairs on both sides, and fringed round the margins,
ovate or lanceolate, acute, tapering at each end, some
entire, others producing two segments or leaflets at the base,
or sometimes pinnatifid ; segments or leaflets linearly lanceolate,
acute. Petioles long and slender, very hairy, and
clothed with a canescent pubescence. Stipules very long, linear,
acute, very hairy. Scapes branching, leafy at the
base of the peduncles, clothed with long spreading white
hairs. Peduncles quadrangular, also densely clothed with
hairs. Umbels four to six-flowered. Involucre of several
narrow taper-pointed bractes, densely clothed with long
spreading white hairs. Calyx 5-cleft, densely clothed or
bearded with innumerable spreading white hairs, which
ftoarrmif ear oduesn steu tbueft: segments lanceolate, acute, erect. Nec
about the length of, or sometimes much
longer than the calyx, also very hairy. Petals 5, reflexed
about the middle, the two upper ones rather broadest, spa-
tulate, white, with a dark purple patch near the base, which
