Root tuberous. Leaves crowning the root, clothed with
a canescent hairiness, very variable, the lower ones sometimes
simple and ovate, others ternate, pinnatifid or pinnate
; leaflets or segments generally opposite, roundly
ovate or sometimes elliptic, obtuse, entire or sometimes
deeply cleft or divided, terminal one much the largest,
particularly on the lower leaves, all clothed with a close hairy
canescence. Petioles flattened on the upper side and convex
on the lower, widened at the base, very hairy. Scapes
divided, each bearing several umbels of flowers, producing
a small leaf or two Peduncles at the base of the peduncles. Umbels
many-Involucre flowered. clothed with canescent hairs. of several narrow, linear, acute bractes. Calyx
5-cleft, the segments lanceolate, clothed with short succulent
tariferous hairs, the tube upper one erect, the others reflexed. Nec
about double the length of the calyx, also
clothed with short succulent hairs. Petals 5, of a bright
scarlet, narrowly ligulate; the lower ones narrowest, linear;
upper ones with a long unguis, reflexed about the middle. Filaments 10, united into a tube, 5 only bearing anthers. Style purple. Stigmas 5, purple, their points reflexed.
