The smaller of the two collected ones shows on the
posterior p art of the body narrow blackish oblique bars.
It has a length of 620 m.m. The broad black lateral band
along the posterior p art of the body and along the tail is
very distinct in both.

Western-Nias, head and tail of 1 specimen.
Nias, 1 specimen.
The head of the first-mentioned specimen is olive-brown
above, greenish below. These two colours are separated by
a black streak along the side of the head, passing through the
eye; scales of the neck black-edged. Tail brown, scales also
black-edged.
The other specimen is a young one, of 550 m.m. length.
Its ground-colour is olive-brown, somewhat lighter in the
lower parts; throat yellowish, ventral keels yellowish an d
each ventral scale bordered on its posterior part with yellowish.
On the posterior part of the back narrow oblique light b a r s ,
caused by the skin between every third or fourth row of
scales.
Distribution. Himalayas, Tenasserim, Malacca, Nicobars,
Andamans, Nias, Sumatra, N a tu n a , Borneo, Java, Lombok,
Philippines.

The specimen from Lolowua is a young one, 330 m.m. It
shows the black streak below the eye and the two oblique
stripes behind the eye and on the n e c k , and ra th e r indistinctly
the yellow vertebral stripe and the yellow black-edged ocelli
on the flanks. The other four specimens are ad u lt, all of the
same blackish-brown colour, without any markings, except
on the head , where the black streaks are indicated.

Nias, Sumatra, Borneo, Java , Timor.

Besides the specimen from Nias, the Zoological Museum in
Amsterdam is in possession of three others of this variety,
which is described by Cohn. As they do not quite agree
with his description concerning the scales of the head, I give
here the situation of those shields with regard to the four
specimens.

Upper labials 8 on the left side, fourth and fifth in contact
with the eye; 9 on the right side, fifth and sixth u nder the
eye. Frontal not in contact with the praeocular. Snout short
