REPTILES
BY
Dr. NELLY DE ROOY, AMSTERDAM.
The collection of reptiles from Nias, brought home by Dr.
Kleiweg de Zw a an , is by far the largest, that exists from that
island. It consists of 50 species: Chelonia 2, Lacertilia 19,
Ophidia 29, 16 of which were previously not known from
there. On Pulu Nako, a small island, west of Nias, were
collected two species of lizards and two snakes.
Publications about smaller or larger collections of reptiles
from Nias exist by:
Boulenger, in Ann. Nat. Hist. (5) XVI 1885 p. 388,
Fischer, in Abh. Naturw. Ver. Hamburg Bd. IX Heft 1
1886 p. 3,
Modigliani, in Ann. Mus. Civ. Genova (2) VII 1889 p. 113,
Boettger, in Ber. Senckenb. Nat. Ges. 1889 p. 306,
v. Lidth de Jeude, in Notes Leyden Mus. Vol. X I I1890 p. 253,
W e rn e r, in Jahresber. Ver. Magdeburg 1892/93 p. 248.
On the next pages I will first give a list of the species,
captured during the expedition in 1910, followed by o n e , in
which all the species, known till now from Nias, are put
together. The last one shows in the same time , if the species
is also known from the other small islands *), lying in a long
line before the West-coast of Sumatra and from Sumatra
itself 2).

The collection was made at different spots in the neighbourhood
of the villages Gunung Sitoli and Lolowua, in
Western Nias and in Southern Nias. Unhappily the label of
one of the bottles with snakes and lizards has been lo st, so
th a t I cannot say from which of those places they come.
In the following description of species, they ¡are indicated
with „Nias” only.
