D escription. T H E comb, wattles, fkin, and membrane which covers the
bones, in this variety are black : the plumage is for the mod
part of the fame colour : and the ffefh. itlilf, when boiled, is laid
to be as black as ink *.
Place.' Thefe are found about-the province of Mejdmlique, in Africa,
the coafi: of Malabar, Siam, &e. and are faid to be very good;
eating, though at firlt mult be very difgufting to an European/
palate.

Inhabits Japan * j and reckoned fcarce even in China, where the
Cantonefe carry them about in cages for fale to the Europeans.
Thefe feem to vary. Some which I have feen are of a pure
white; others of a, dingy brown 5 but all of them have dark-
coloured legs; on- which, for the moll part, is a thick, ftout, and-
Ihort fpur, though I obferved one Cock totally without; the
legs not always feathered.
In the colleftion of Charles Boddam, Efq; is one of thefe, with
two hind toes f , and a.blunt flat fpur, above an inch in length.

H E bill in this fpecies is red : on the forehead is a red caruncle,
fomewhat rounded in Ihape, and two wattles,' of a
blood-red colour, under the chin, as in the Cock: the crown of
the head is green; at the hind part a folded creft, of a blue
colour; the hind part of the neck is green; on each fide fur-
niflied1 with long variegated' feathers, which ftand out from
the neck, and turn backwards: the Ihoulders are green, fpotted
with white : the wings red : prime quills'blue: the body is red :
the tail long and’ cuneiform; the feathers are blue and red mixed;
and the coverts are of feveral eolburs, and fall- over the fides of
it;': the legs are yellow, and not furnifhed with fpurs.-
