This appears to have been also observed by Gaudicliaud, but neither named nor described. At fli-st sight
it resembles some of the Lasiopetalea.

Found ou the ishinds of Oahu aud Oneeheow. Gaudichaud notices a species of this genus which
he met with, and which is probably the same as ours. The calyx is more or less covered with yellow
resinous glands, which we do not find noticed by authors. Mr. Beuthara, in the Linnæa, v. 6 . p. 80,
states the species detected in Oahu, by Chamisso, to he P. parvijiorus, Willd.; and certainly onrs accords
well with the figure given in the Hort. Berol. t. 65 ; but the calyx is described as without glauds.
1. Phyllostegia glabra; glaberrima, foliis petiolatis ovatis acuminatis serrato-crenatis
basi rotundatis, floralibus minoribus breviter petiolatis, racemis subpaniculatis, pedunculis
utrinque elongatis trifidis, calycis ovato-campanulati dentibus brevibus acutis demum p aten tibus,
corolla calyce vix duplo longiore, styli lobis clavatis recurvato-divaricatis. Benth. in

Mr. Bentham remarks that Gaudichaud’s plate is compounded of the present and the next species : in this,
the coroUa is much the smallest. Tlie specimen in the CoUection is very imperfect, but w'e have one from
Mr. Macrae. As this genus has been only lately separated by Mr. Bentham from Prasium, we sbaU here
quote the character: P u y l l o s t e g ia . Gaud. Calyx ovatus, 10-nervis,subæqualis, nunc 5-fidus, lobis ovatis
foliaceis, nunc breviter 5-dentatus. Corolla tubo calycem superante, nunc longe exserto, soepius incurvo,
fauce nou iuflata, bilabiata: labio superiore subpatente integro subplano; inferiore longiore patente 3-fido,
lobis ovatis, medio majore integro. Stamina 4, sub labio superiore adscendentia. Antheræ biloculares, loculis
divergentibus vel demum divaiicatis. Stylus apice clavatus, breviter bifidus, lobis clavato-divaricatis vel
lunatis. Acheuia carnosa. Verticillastra racemosa vel paniculata, foliis floralibus bracteiformibus.
2. Phyllostegia Chamissonis; glaberrima, foliis petiolatis ovatis acuminatis serrato-crenatis
basi rotundatis, floralibus minoribus sessilibus, racemis subpaniculatis, pedunculis uüúnque
elongatis trifidis, calycis elongato-turbinati dentibus brevibus obtusis erectis, corolla calyce
triplo longiore, styli lobis clavatis, superiore sub recto tenuiore. Benth. in L innæa, v. 6. p . 81.
The corolla is about an inch and a quarter long, being almost as large as in P. grandiflora, but it is glabrous
and not pubescent.
