Our specimens are only in bud, and may prove a distinct species. In one instance the peduncle is terminal
and not jointed, so that it perhaps ought to be described as terminal on a short axillary branch, which is
furnished about the middle with two smaU opposite deciduous leaves.

pedunculis bibracteatis, bracteis cordiformibus basi bibracteolatis, floribus ternis sessilibus.

Caulis altissimus, gracilis, lignosus, ramique teretes. Ramuli ancipiti-comprcssi, glabri. Folia fere 3 uncias
longa, obovata, vel late ovalia, coriacea, obtusa, venosa atque reticulata, integerrima, glabra, supra pracipue
nitida. Petioli 2 lineas longi, hinc plani, dorso convexi, crassiusculi. Stipules parv®, lato-ovata?, miicronato-
acuminatie, deciduse, in axilUs parum pilos». Pedunculi axillares et terminales subsosquiimciam longi, apice
bracteas 2 lato-cordatas 6-8 liueas longas erectas acutas foliáceas ad basiu bibracteolatas gerentes. Bracteolce
stipularum forma et magnitudine. Flores 3, sessiles intra bracteas, vel brevissime pedicellati, odorati. Calyx
urceolato-cylindraceus, superne liberus, brevissime 4-dentatus. Corolla hj’pocraterifonnis, rubra. Tubus
elongatus, gracilis, 6-7 lineas longus, limbo (»stivatione spirali) patentissimo 4-partito, laciniis lanceolatis
tubo subbrevioribus. Stamina 4, fauci inserta. Antherts lineares, acut». Gei-men ovali-cylindraceum.
Stylus glaber, filiformis, superne glandulosus, tubo lougior. Stigma clavatum, bipartitum.
H ab . Elizabeth Island. “ This,” Mr. Collie observes, “ forms a tree or shrub, tbe trunk of which is
very slender, about two inches (feet?) in circiunference, and twenty feet high. The wood is whitish,
very hard, and close-grained, with a reddish inner bm-k.” It seems to approach the Cephaelis speciosa ot
Sprengel, (from Tahiti,) but the leaves are not “ oblongo-lanceolate.”
