fuscis albo-ciliatis, acumiue setaceo subherbaceo: alterius folioli longiori. Spiculoe parvæ, 1-H lineam
longæ, dense confertæ, ovatæ vel ovato-lanceolate, acutiusculæ, compresso-trigonæ. Rachis flexuosa, ad
genicula truncato-quadrata, triquetra, glabra. Squamoe trifariam imbricatæ, ovatæ, alte nec acute carinatæ,
apice subtruncatæ et hinc extrorsum mueronulum patulum exserentcs, membranaceæ, scabræ, purpureæ,
margine angusto albo cinetæ, dorso trinerves, necque hac in parte discolores. Stamina plerumque duo,
ranus tria, filamentis glabris. Urceolus ovarium cingens nullus. Stylus filiformis, glaber, a basi tubercuü-
formi eadens; stigmata tria, stylo breviora, hirta. Caryopsis obovata, æquilatero-trigona, læviuscula,
obsoletissime punctulata, pallide lutea, tubérculo verticis fusco, e styli basi residuo coronata, nuda,
neque urceolo inferne cincta, stipiti brevissimo papilliformi.—Hæc species Indica a Browniana illa differt involucri
brevi, nec capitulum excedente.

Pedunculus gracilis, compressus, scaber. Spiculoe in ramulis geminatæ, subglomeratim approximate, 7-8 in
quovis fascículo corymbuli bifidi, oblongæ, 4-5-floræ. Squamoe latæ, ovatæ, acutæ, iminerves, nervo cxcur-
rentc mucronatæ, brunneæ, margine pallidiores; infimæ duæ stériles, minores, obtusiusculæ cum mucrone.
Stamina tria. Stylus bifidus. Caryopsis seminis Viciæ fere magnitudine, obovata, lenticulari-compressa,
marginibus acutis, utrinque interrupte undato-scrobiculata, fusca, styli basi conica compressa obtusiuscula,
utrinque obiter bisulca, grísea, discreta. Seloe 8-9, caryopsin cum rostello æquantes, retrorsum hispidoe.

vaginis exaridis elongatis pallidis laxe vestite. Culmi 1^-2 pedes alti, crassitie pennæ Columbinæ, téreti-
usculi, altero latere paullo magis depresso, altero inæqualiter costulato, striati, in siceo nonnihil torti, non
scabri, basi sola foliosi. Vaginoe ratione laminæ breves, striate, compressæ, læves, altero latere membranaceæ
lacero-dchiscentes, in laminam continuæ. Folia culmo aliquanto breviora, lin. lata linearia, acuminata,
carinata et basin versus complicata, glabra, lævia, margine scabra, flaccida, glauca. Capitulum terminale,
magnitudine nucis moscbatæ, subglobosum, densum. Involucrum 4-6-phyllum, foliolis a basi
lineam lata planiuscula ciliata, in acumen carinatum continue attenuatis, totis herbaceis et rigidis patulis, inferné
ciliatis apicem versus serrulato-scabris, quorum majus vix bipollicare, reliqua ad pollices deerescunt
miiioraque capituli ambitum intrant. Spiculoe per fasciculos 3-4-stacliyos sessiles distribute, confertæ, omnino
sessiles, primum pallide virescentes, demum ferrugincæ, glabræ, lanceolatæ, comprcsso-ancipites, acuminatæ,
incurvæ, primum arcte imbricate, sub fructu apice dehiscentes. -SywamiE omnino distichæ, ovatæ, chartaceæ,
uninervcs, carinatæ, septenoe ; quatuor inferiores stériles, breves, magniludine tamen crescente, acutæ ; quinta
præcedcnte majore lE h sub fructu 2 lin.longa, longius acutata; sexta ejusdem formæ sed paullo longior et
angustior magisque acuminata, teneriurque convoluta, amplectens margine báseos pistillum apiceque styhim
arcte retinens, per se quidem sessilis, sed sinu recondens squamam septiinam minorem teneriorem, oblongam,
acutam, convolutam, stamina continentem. Pistillum unum in axilla squamæ quinte. Stylus iongissimus,
squamam sextam excedens, filiformis, glaber, simplicissimus, apice semel bisve contortus acutiusculus, basi
strictura insertus vertici ovarii spongioloso capituliformi ; ovarium oblongum, trigonum, perigynio sexseto
cinctum. Caryopsis obovata, seminis papaveris magnitudine, utrinque convexa, subtilissime punctulato-
esasperata, margine angusto calloso pallidiore a vertice in basin angustatam continuo cincto, apice orbiculo
convexo carinato ruguloso coronata, basi perianthii setulis 4-6 triplo brevioribus retrorsum hispidis fundo
conjunctis stipitata, primum lutea, dein fusca. Perzyynzz exterioris lacinulæ albæ, filiformes, caryopsi multo
breviores, denique obsolete. Flos masc. stamina tria, squama séptima circumdata; filamenta lincaria,
brunnea, squamam sub anthesi æquantia ; antheræ lineares, apiculate, bilocellatæ, luteæ, basi veluli in
stipitem sterilem filiformem attenuate ejusque opera filamento strictura argute intercedente impositæ, ita
ut primo attractu dcfluant.
