Pileus fleshy, convex, then expanded, broadly umbonate, longitudinally
fibrous (3 -4 in. diam ), with darker fibrils, fuscous, margin
paler, incurved, disc dark, bistre nearly hlack; stem solid, eqnal,
straight or curved, sometimes twisted (3-4 in. x -|-f in.), striate,
dark below when old, pallid and mealy above, flesh dirty white ;
gills adnexed, somewhat rounded behind, rather broad, pallid, then
umber. Spores elliptical, sinootb, rather irregular.—Cooke Illus.
