tom plaints': in other refpeóts thé people were" in gooif
health, though exceedingly jaded.
The paflage round Gape Horn, into the South. Seas,-
during thé fummer months, has feldom been attended1
with difficulty, and is to be preferred, in the moderate fea-
fens, to the more diftant route to the eaftward, round the
Cape o f Good Hópè and' New Holland. I f we had been
one month earlier, or perhaps lefs, I doubt not but we
lhould have effetted our paflage.
The foundings that are-met with off the coaft of America,
from the latitude of 36° S tb the fcmthward, are very
convenient to enable fhips tó' judge-of their'diflrahce from,
the land, as thick fogs are very frequent near that coaft.-
I f the winds are favourable, to go through Straits le Maire
muff conliderably fhorten the paflage rotirid-Cape Horn,;
as all the drftance faved is fb much gained tó the weft-
ward. I am informed, that feveral harbours havé been
lately difcovered by the South Sea whalers,'on the north
fide o f Staten Ifland, that afford fafe •anchorage;, with
fupplies o f wood and water.
While we were off Gape Horn, Ï did not obferve thaC
our- fituatkm was at 'ah aflèétéd by currents*.
