Dahlia fulgens. Hortulanorum.
Root perennial, producing numerous tubers, th a t are
oblong, attenuated a t both ends, unequal in size and
form Stems several from the same root when of a sut-
ficient size, erect, from 6 to 10 feet high, branching only
towards the point, of a thick swollen appearance, but
quite hollow w ithin, the outsides being very thin, so th a t
they are easily broken down with the wind, or sometimes
even with their own w eight, quite smooth, slightly
glaucescent, and more or less tinged w ith p u rp le : branches
erect, smooth, slightly glaucescent, purplish. Leaves
opposite, petiolate, the rachis not winged: lower ones
2-3-pinnate: stem ones less divided: upper ones near
the flowers simply pinnate: leaflets oyat&, taper-pomted,
and slightly tapering to the base, bluntly serrated, the
taper points entire; teeth b ent a little inwards, margins
rough, occasioned by little rigid gland-like transparent
hairs, the points of which bend inwards, underneath pen-
nately or feather-nerved, and reticulately veined, the
nerves and veins thinly hairy. Petioles naked connected
a t the base, where they are widened or dilated, channelled
on the upper side and rounded below, smooth,
and more or less tinged w ith purple. Flowers terminating
the branches, of a brilliant saffron colour, or orangy scarlet.
Peduncle long, cylindrical, striated, smooth, and
glossy. Involucre of 2 series, the outer senes consisting
of 7 or 8 leaflets, th a t are ovate, attenuated to the base.
