A large ancl very handsome round-headed tre e, with broad, deep green,
shining leaves, deeply heart-shaped at the base. I t grows with rapidity in dry
soil, and is one o f th e most interesting ornamental trees th a t have o f late years
been introduced. I t is a most distinct species j and, though a native o f tho
kingdom o f Naples, it is perfectly hardy. I t ripens seeds in th e climate of
London, and might easily be rendered as common as A. glutinosa.

to th e birches, by th e parts o f its fructification, and by th e somewhat greater
number o f its stamens.
