when ripe. T h e ju ic e o f th e fruit is used for
making the jn ju b e lozenge.s. T h e plant is
tolerably hardy ; having stood the winter o f
1837-8 in the H o rt. Soc. Garden. I t is easily
increased by cuttings o f th e roots, whether of
young o r old trees ; or by suckers, which it
throws lip in th e g reatest abundance. Seeds
o f it may also be procured from Italy.
Other Species o f TAzyphus. — Z. sinénsis Lam.
has been cultivated in the H o rt. Soc. Garden
b u t it is only lialf-hardy ; and th e same may
he said o f Z. spina ChrisA, Z. flexuòsa, and
Z. incùrva, which are marked in some catalogues
as hardy.

Spec. Char., 4c. Branchlets pubescent. Leaves ovate, serrulated, quite
smooth, 3-nerved, with two spines a t th e base, one straight, th e o th e r re-
curved. Flowers m axillary crowded umbellules ; few in an umbellule.

30 ft. Introduced_ in lo96. Flowers greenish yellow; Ju n e and July.

appearance o f this fruit, which has the footstalk a ttached to th e middle,

The only tree which we have seen o f this species ri in
the Chelsea Botanic Garden, where in general aspect it +
