The name o f Legumiimcem is applied to this extensive and tru ly natural

pods, bearing more or less resemblance to those o f th e common pea or bean :
and quite different from th e siliquose pods o f cruciferous plants.
The ligneous species are trees and shrubs, for th e most p a rt deciduous : and
they are disposed through almost every p a rt o f th e world. The order contains
some o f o u r finest ornamental shrubs and low trees, such as Robima, Cytisus,
Wistaria, Genista, G 'le x , Amorpha, Halimodéndron, ric a d a , Gleditschia,
Cercis, and various others. I t also contains some considerable trees, which
belong to th e genera Robinia, Gleditschia, Sophàra, &c. T h e genera conf

Candolle and G. Don, we place in characterised sections, and ascribe to them
short characters, th a t are more o r less contradistinctive.
