U n d e r th e general name o f variegated hollies, tw e n ty o r th irty varieties,
some o f them with, and some o f them w ith o u t, popular names, are obtainable
in th e principal Lo n d o n nurseries. Having examined and compared the
different shades o f variegation in th e plants in th e very complete collection
o f Messrs. Loddiges, we th in k th e y may be all included in th e following
groups : —
Î I. A. 16 âlbo-marginàlum H o rt. — Leaves with white edges. O f this
variety th e subvarieties in Loddiges’s a rboretum are marked 5, 15,
18, and 24, which have all long and narrow leaves, with edgings o f
white or pale yellow along th e ir margins ; and 4, 6, 7, 12, 17, 22, 23,
and 28, which have larger leaves, and a greater bre ad th o f margin
variegated ; th e white o r pale yellow forming in some cases one
th ird , o r even one half, o f th e surface o f th e leaf.
Î L A . 17 aureo-marginàtum H o rt. — Leaves with yellow edges. The
following subvarieties are in Messrs. Loddiges’.s a rboretum. Nos. 19
and 20 with dark yellow margins; and Nos. 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 13, and
29, with margins of d a rk a n d light yellow. A n o th e r subdivision o f
this group consists o f plants with broad leaves, in what may be
called a transition s ta te from green to variegated, viz., with greenish
yellow o r very pale green blotches o r margins. When such plants
become old, they are generally very distinctly variegated w ith yellow.
Examples in th e H ackney a rboretum are Nos. 3, 20, and 21.
Î L A. IS alho-pictum H o rt. — Leaves spotted with white. This variety
has a considerable po rtio n o f the centre o f th e disk o f th e leaf white,
and o f a somewhat tran sp aren t appearance ; th e edges o f th e disk
o f th e le a f being green.
