Spec. Char., 4c- Bran ch e s decumbent, round, and
smoothish. Leaves ovate or elliptic, somewhat
clammy, glandular,serrated, upper surface shining,
u nder surface covered with adpressed hairs, 3-
nerved. Stipules awl-shaped. Panicles axillary.
(Knowles and Westcott.) A hardy, evergreen, low,
decumbent shrub. N o rth America. Height 1 ft.
In tro d u ce d in 1827. Flowers white, produced
in g re a t a b undanc e ; J u n e and Ju ly . F ru it
brown ; ripe in September.
Layers, which ro o t readily, or seeds.
Other Species o f Ceanòthus. — C. ovàtus and C.
intermèdius, we have seen, on th e a u th o rity o f
T o rrey and G ray ,a re onlyvarieties o f P. americànus;
and we have no doubt th a t this will be th e case
with C. oviilis, C. sanguineus, C. oregànus, and
o th e r species described by au th o rs. In sh o rt, there
appears to us no assignable limits to th e sports and
hybrids th a t may be produced in this genus.

ovules. Styles 3—5, simple. Fruit berried or capsular. Seeds
small. (L in d l.) — Trees or shrubs ; natives o f S o u th America.
Leaves simple, a lternate, with deciduous stipules, sub-evergreen ; to o th ed
o r entire. Flowers axillary, in spikes, racemes, o r panicles. — T h e species in
British gardens belong to the genera Aristoteh'n and Azara (th e la tte r ra th e r
ten d e r), which are th u s contradistinguished : —
