This species has a thick ro o t and branching stem, with grey bark. T h e
branches are a lte rn a te ; a t first U|)right, and then decumbent. The whole plant
has a singular appearance, more especially when ju s t going o u t o f flower. I t
is generally propagated by separating the offsets, o r by seeds, o r it may be
grafted on C. arborescens. Grafted on this species, especially when th e stock
is 10 o r 13. feet high, it forms a singularly picturesque pendulous tr e e ; beautiful
not only when it is in leaf or in flower, but from th e graceful lines formed
by its branches, even in the midst o f winter, when th ey are completely stripped
o f their leaves.

Leaves compound, alternate, stipulate, deciduous ; abruptly pinnate, with
2 pairs o f leaflets : petioles and stipules spinose. Floivers bluish pink, or
purplish, in 2— 3-flowered [leduncles.— Shrubs, deciduous; natives o f Eu ro p e
and Asia.
Propagated by seeds, by cuttings o f th e roots, o r by grafting on th e common
laburnum, o r on th e Caragàna arboréscens.

named by some as a species. H. S.
An irregular, much-branched, rigid shrub, with a strigose grey bark, and
leaves clothed with a whitish silky down. T h e flowers are numerous, resembling
those o f L a th y ru s tuberòsiis, both in colour and size ; and they smell
sweet. According to Pallas, it is much frequented by insects, especially of the
genus Meloe L ., many species o f which are peculiar to Siberia. I t flowers
freely from May to Ju ly , and, in moist seasons, la te r ; and, when grafted
standard high on th e common laburnum, it forms one o f th e most graceful
drooping trees th a t can adorn a lawn.
