the under surface paler than the upper. A shrub, or, when trained
to a single stem, a miniature tree.
This s ftcies, being one of the first introduced into England, has been more
cultivated than any other American thorn ; and on the wliole it is one of the
roost splendid in appearance, from its smooth, shining, dark green folia«e and
the great abundance of its fine w hite flowers, and dark red fruit which remains
-ong on the tree. ^ In the South of England, and in the climate of London in
warm sheltered situations, where the soil is rich and moist, it retains its leaves
and frmt through great part of the winter, so as to appear quite evergreen.
